“Waverley Singers”

An enthusiastic audience was treated to an excellent performance by the Waverley Singers at St Lawrence Church in Alton.
The varied and interesting programme included familiar and less known works, all of which were sung with great commitment under the direction of Richard Pearce. The highlight of the first half was Bach’s motet Jesu Meine Freude. The choir rose to the considerable musical and technical challenges of this complex and sublime work. In complete contrast, the concert finished with a light-hearted setting by Alan Bullard of various health and safety warning notices. As the picture shows, conductor Richard Pearce was taking no chances!
With the expert accompaniment of Philip Scriven, the choir showed impressive versatility, and was equally convincing in all the different musical styles.
A bucket collection after the concert raised £434 for Bushy Leaze Children and Family Centre in Alton, which took the total raised for local charities after shows in 2018-19 to nearly £2,400.
The Waverley Singers return to St Lawrence Church on Sunday, December 15, for a Christmas programme. The rehearsals for the 2019-20 season, preparing for their October concert, start on September 5 at South Farnham School. Singers of all voices are welcome to attend a rehearsal.
