Waverley Singers

Note the presence among the soloists of the then unknown bass, John Shirley-Quirk, who subsequently became world famous. We reproduce below a lovely letter from him to the Choir Secretary asking whether a fee of ten guineas, all-in (i.e. presumably to include travel expenses) would be considered appropriate! As the prescient reviewer said: "The highlight of the concert was the singing of John Shirley-Quirk, bass. His rich, expressive, voice gave meaning to the words and the shivering effect in the frost scene was most realistic."

How modest he was, and how lucky we were!
